Tennis Spotlight: Wednesday, March 24, 2004 By Bob Heller The USP men's tennis team finally opened their season yesterday, taking on area rival West Chester University. Coach Julian Snow had his young USP squad ready for the match as they earned their first ever win over the Rams, 7-2. USP recorded four hard fought wins in singles competition and swept through all three doubles matches. Amit Ray (Sr., Absegami HS/Galloway Twp., NJ) and Olufemi Ogunkorode (Fr., Upper Darby HS/Upper Darby, PA) defeated Keith McCaffery and Jim Orr to win the #1 doubles match, 8-3. Ryan Pell (Fr., West York Area HS/York, PA) and Dan Lewycky (Jr., Oratory Prep HS/Livingston, NJ) won at #2 doubles, 8-7(8-6), defeating Zach Ryland and Brian Harris while Dave Sen (Fr., Eastern Regional HS/Voorhees, NJ) and Nirav Pandya (Fr., Raritan HS/Hazlet, NJ) won at #3 doubles, 8-3, defeating Mike Cohen and Andrew Silverman. Moving on to singles competition, Ray need three sets to defeat Ryland at #2 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Ogunkorode scored a 6-0, 6-4 win over Orr to take the #3 singles match while Lewycky defeated Harris 6-4, 6-1 at #4 singles. Rounding out the singles winners for the Devils was Sen, who defeated Mike Orenshaw 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) at #5 singles. USP is now 1-0 overall. |
