PENNSAUKEN - A cold, rainy, windy day played havoc with the Knecht Cup Regatta over the weekend on the Cooper River, causing Saturday's races to be postponed in the early afternoon and adding the remainder of the competition to Sunday's schedule.
The Rutgers University-Camden crew team placed two boats in the finals, but due to the confusing schedule only one boat, the Men's Varsity Four Div. II/III team, was able to compete. The Rutgers-Camden Women's Division III Varsity Four team, along with another boat, missed the finals in the long delay and rearranged schedule. Another boat from Rutgers-Camden, the Men's Club Four, had to be scratched due to the scheduling changes.
The Lady Raptors finished fourth in their heat of the Women's Division III Varsity Eight in a race where times were unavailable. Members of that boat included sophomore coxswain Michelle Sanchirico (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep), senior stroke Nicole Corl (Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), sophomore 7-seat Laura Williams (Cherry Hill, NJ/home schooled), junior 6-seat Renee Martin (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest), junior 5-seat Cynthia Burt (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford), sophomore 4-seat Monica Fleming (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood), freshman 3-seat Regina Williams (Cherry Hill, NJ/home schooled), freshman 2-seat Rachel Negro (Audubon, NJ/Paul VI) and sophomore bow Traci Arnold (Pitman, NJ/Pitman).
The Women's Division III Varsity Four included coxswain Sanchirico, stroke Corl, 3-seat Laura Williams, 2-seat Martin and bow Fleming. That team finished with an 8:52.2 time to place fourth in its heat and qualify for the final. The Women's DI/II Club Four team, meanwhile, was fourth in its race in a time of 9:55.9. That team included coxswain Sanchirico, stroke Burt, 3-seat Regina Williams, freshman 2-seat Rachel Negro (Audubon, NJ/Paul VI) and bow Arnold.
On the men's club team, the Div. II/III Varsity Four finished fourth in the finals (7:29.9) after placing second in its heat (7:51.4). That boat included were junior cox BJ Ochal (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic), junior stroke Lou Gallagher (Florence, NJ/Holy Cross), sophomore 3-seat Lance Carsillo (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken), senior 2-seat Chris Piligno (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and freshman bow Joe Cardillo (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown).
The Men's Varsity Pair, with stroke Gallagher and bow Piligno, posted a 7:53.3 time to finish fourth in its heat.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action April 15 when it travels to Baltimore, Maryland, for the Johns Hopkins Invitational.
