South Jersey Cheerleading: Tuesday, September 8, 1998
By Tracy Williams and Megan Wolfrom "We are the mighty cheerleaders and we're gonna rock this team to a victory!" Cheerleading isn't just acting silly. Cheerleading is learning jumps, stunts, cheers and dances. We should know, we spent this past summer at Shawnee cheerleading camp. During the week of July 13-17, Shawnee High School had a cheerleading camp. The camp was run by Shawnee's cheerleading coaches - Mrs. Horner (Football), Mrs. Smith (Basketball) and by a variety of Shawnee Varsity cheerleaders. The days started out at 9:00 am with a short jog, then a short workout, and then stretches. The we would brake up into 4 groups and go to different stations- Chants, Motions, Jumps, and Cheers. Around 12:00 pm we would go into the cafeteria and eat lunch and watch cheerleading videos until 1:00 pm. Next, we would learn a dance the varsity cheerleaders made up during lunch or that they had performed some other time. On Friday, our parents came and we showed them everything we learned over the week. We also were given words to a cheer and we had to make up the motions and put a stunt in our routine, and then we were evaluated for different things like stiff arms, loudness, etc. The camp was very tiring, it was hot, we were all sweaty, but all in all it was pure fun. They are having the same camp next year. Maybe we will see you there.
