South Jersey Baseball: Thursday, September 2, 2004 By Don Delaney Pennsville High School product Chris Widger belted a 2-1 fastball from Somerset reliever Paul Darnell over the wall in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the Riversharks to an 8-7 victory at Campbell’s Field on Thursday night. It capped a four-hit night for the Camden catcher, who also recorded singles in the first, fifth and seventh innings. The Riversharks were forced to overcome an early five-run first inning deficit to earn the victory. After the Riversharks scored four times in the bottom of the first inning to cut the Somerset lead to one run, 5-4, Brad Strauss hit a two-run home run in the second inning to give Camden its first lead of the game at 6-5. Victor Rodriguez would not allow the Patriots to go quickly into the night as he hit his 20th home run of the season in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game at 7-7. Joe Strong retired one batter on the night as he improved to 3-0 on the year. Darnell on the otherhand dropped to 2-4 on the year. The Riversharks and Patriots will meet for the final time in 2004 on Friday night when they meet at 6:35 p.m. Lincoln Mikkelsen will be in search of his 10th win of the season for the Riversharks. It will be fireworks night at the ballpark presented by CBS 3.
