South Jersey Baseball: Tuesday, July 20, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Atlantic City Surf dropped the second game of their three game series against the Newark Bears on Tuesday night at Sandcastle Stadium 4-1. The Surf were held scoreless after jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Surf first baseman Jose Velazquez drove in the lone Surf run against Bears starter Clint Smith. Smith dominated, picking up the win after allowing only a run and a hit in six and two-thirds. He struck out five and allowed four walks. Reliever Reggie Harris picked up his ninth save for pitching a scoreless ninth. Jason Dewey drove in two runs and scored twice for the Bears. Rickey Henderson walked twice, stole a base, and was caught stealing for only the second time this season. Surf all-star starter Andy Zwirchitz gave up all four runs, three earned in six innings of work while striking out eight. Wedneday is Camp Special Day at the Sandcastle as the two teams square off for the rubber match at 11:05am. Kids can run the bases following the game sponsored by Conectiv. The Bears will throw Greg Bauer against the Surf’s Kyle Goldwater. |
