South Jersey Baseball: Thursday, May 13, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Atlantic City Surf (4-2) shutout the Pennsylvania Road Warriors (0-7) Thursday afternoon at The Sandcastle 4-0. The win completes the Surf’s sweep of the three game series. The game was played in front of 3,605 fans, mostly students, as it was School Special Day. Surf pitchers allowed only five hits and two walks while striking out seven. The Surf pitching staff has allowed only two free passes in the past two games. Atlantic City’s starter, Marty Barnett (2-0) pitched six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out four, to record his second win in as many starts. Surf reliever Damon Ponce DeLeon was equally impressive, striking out three, walking one, and allowing only one hit in his three scoreless innings. Ponce DeLeon picked up his first save of the year. He is the third Surf reliever to record a save this season. Road Warrior’s starter Julian Heredia (0-2) pitched well in his six innings of work, but still was handed his second loss of the season. Heredia allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five. Surf second baseman Demetrius Heath made the most of his spot start. Heath went two for four with a solo shot and two runs scored in place of regular second baseman Raul Marval. All eight of the Surf’s home runs have been with the bases empty this year. Atlantic City begins a three game series against the Bridgeport Bluefish. Friday’s game begins at 6:35 PM with fireworks following the game sponsored by Atlantic Medical Imaging. Both games during the weekend start at 1:35 PM. |
