South Jersey Baseball and Softball: Saturday, April 17, 1999
By Gary Finigan The skies were blue, the grass green and the fields dragged and lined. With the playing of the National Anthem, the Waterford Township Athletic Association kicked off the 1999 Baseball and Softball season. WTAA President Tony Luceri presided over ceremonies at Ritter Field. With family and friends looking on, and smiles abounding, the players marched on and lined the field along the edge of the infield. Speaking from center field, Tony Luceri welcomed all in attendance for opening day. Next, the directors for each of the baseball and softball leagues were introduced. Brian Grubb was awarded the annual WTAA scholarship for tuition assistance. Service award plaques were also presented to Joe Arena, Dave Gabrielski and Gary Christiansen for past service with the WTAA. After the awards presentation, Mayor Paul Grubb stepped to the mound to throw out the first pitch. Showing good form, Mayor Grubb's first pitch was low and inside for ball one. He later tossed the ball to a lucky player on the field. With the ceremonies complete, the players filed off the field. The distinction of playing the first game went to the t-ball league. At this time I would like to welcome my neighbors from Waterford Township to South Jersey Sports Online. I look forward to working with you all in providing coverage for the 1999 season. If you should see me at a game and have a suggestion, feel free to talk with me. Until then, Play Ball! Photos by Gary Finigan
