Following are questions asked by our readers concerning the rules of football, as well as other aspects of the sport. If you have a question for Coach Derryk Sellers, click here to Ask the Football Coach!

Question:

Hi, I live in Lawnside and my son wanted to know if he could play for the Lindenwold Chargers. His name is Quinzel Moore and he his 12 yrs old. But could you see if he could play? Thank you.   (Aaron from Lawnside, NJ)

Answer:

He would have to talk to the Chargers about that. I think he can but he will have to get a waiver. Go to the Chargers (www.lindenwoldchargers.org) and ask them. Good luck.

Question:

What is the earliest age boys can start playing football safely? My son will be in second grade this year, he'll be 7 in August. My husband is pressing me to let him play this year, but I've always heard his bones are still forming at this age and an injury at this age would not be good. What do you think, and can you refer me to any other informative websites?   (Edie from London, KY)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I have kids in my town that are playing at age 6. It would be okay for your son to play. I don't think it will stunt his growth. Now me personally, my son is 5 and I don't think I will let him start playing until he is older. My reasoning is I don't want him to get burned out and not like playing the game. Here are some web sites that might help you:

Good luck.

Question:

I've been playing football since I was in 8th grade and I love this sport, but I don't think I can play any longer. My first year was with the GT Stallions and with the help of coach Justin Wright I made ALL-STARS with Kordell Young of West Deptford. I played two years of high school then dropped out my junior year. I am currently tutoring to become a Senior and graduate with my class but they will not let me play ball. It's really the reason I went back to school. Is there anyway I can play ball even though I dropped out last year?   (Jeremy from Blackwood, NJ)

Answer:

If you have not earned 27.5 credits then I don't think there is any way you will be eligible. Thanks for your question and good luck to you.

Question:

I coach I am starting freshman football this year and I am a receiver. What is the darkest visor you can have for highschool at freshman football level in IL?   (Tyrone from Huntley, IL)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. In NJ, you can only wear a clear visor. Check with your coach to be sure but I think it has to be clear.

Question:

Hey coach I'm 14 years old and I am going be a freshmen this year and going to play on the hs freshmen team. I'm 5'7 1/2 almost 5'8 and weigh about 145. Yea i'm a girl. I go to the weightroom every morning and lift weights and run with the guys and my best friend who's also a girl but doesn't play football. I can run a mile in about 6 min. I never played football on a real team but I do play in school and really want to play! I play basketball all year round so I do have ups, and I'm the fastest on my aau team. I play softball so I have a good arm. I can throw a baseball about almost 75 mph which is ok. I'm thinking of either playing receiver, defensive linebacker or qb although I don't know if I can. I wanted to know what you think would be the best position for me, and what is some drills for me to work on before season to get my game up and make me a more stronger player mentally and physically. Thanks alot.   (Alison from Cortland Manor, NY)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I admire your heart and determination for wanting to play. I would suggest that you ask the coach about what position to play. He should also be able to help you with any drills you might need. Good luck and let me know how you make out.

Question:

Hey I am 14 years old at 5'6, 137 lbs. I'm working to be a quarterback going for the freshman football team. How much do u think I should lift for a maximum? What is a good work out routine for me to do? Thanks.   (Dan from Marlboro, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Please look through the archives and find the workout that I recommend.

Question:

Dear Coach: I play JV for Sterling High School and even though you may be biased toward Lindenwold I was wondering how well you think Sterling will do this year? With the departure of Scirotto and Kordell Young in West Deptford, how do you think the Colonial Conference will shape up?   (Grant from Somerdale, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. You are totally correct in my bias towards Lindenwold. How could I be the head coach and not root for my own team? That being the case, I do believe that Sterling will be very good this year. I think they will challenge West Deptford for the title. Good luck to you guys this year.

Question:

Hey coach I run a 4.8 40 I bench 145 lbs. I squat 250 I calve raise so much weight that I have to add 2 45 lbs weights when I reached all the way up all the weight on the machine. I'm a FB and I was born and raised here in Murphysboro. I went to schools here and everything. I am an 8th grader but I'm worrying about high school right now. My parents want me to go to the high school that's our rival and always has been, probably always will be. Thats only because they are a bigger high school with more recognition and more resouces for football. I'm confused where should I go to high school? I mean I know I should always listen to my parents but then again this is a matter of pride so I just dunno what to do. Could you help me out?   (Diego from Murphysboro, IL)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. The best advice I could give you is to always listen to your parents. I would suggest that you come up with some really good reason as to why you want to go to one school over the other one. Present an intelligent arguement and they may see your side but always listen to your parents. Good luck.

Question:

Hey coach! I am going into the 7th grade and I have been playing football since I was 7 years old. I played QB for 3 years, then played 1/2 back and full back. On defense I am a strong safety. I have been going to football and speed camps every summer, since I was 8. I have a 3.8 GPA, I run the 40 in 5.0 flat, and I am very interested in going to a D1 University. Is there anyway I can find out what the Universities require my 40 speed and vertical to be? Thank you!   (Addie from Denver, CO)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I would suggest that you keep your grades up and continue to grow as an athlete and let the rest take care of itself. If you are a DI player, believe me they will find you. Good luck.

Question:

Hi Coach, I'm 6'0 and 280pds and I'm going to be a junior this year and I started playing football as a freshman and I have been playing ever since and I have seen playing time freshman year and on JV sophmore year but Now I'm a junior I want to step up and play varsity because we lost our entire offensive line this past season I know I have the potential to be good and I want to Improve myself for my team and for myself. I bench 220, squat 300, power clean 200, and deadlift 500, so I guess Im pretty strong and I big enough to play but I found That my only flaw as a offensive lineman is my agility..I run a pathetic 6.4 40 yard dash (the slowest on my team) I dont mean to give you my life story but I would like you're advice on the most effective workouts and/or Drills I could do to this summer to increase my speed and footwork on the line for the upcomming season so I can experience the the feeling of playing under those friday night lights (please excuse the movie quote) ..haha, Thank's Alot!   (Kurt from Delran, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I would suggest jumping LOTS of rope and doing lots of drills with short quick movements. Like the dot drill. Ask your coach about taping five domino like X's on the floor and you do a series of jumps to each dot. Good luck to you.

Question:

Hey Coach, I'm in college right now and have finally figured out what I want to do with my life. I love sports and have always played them. I'm getting a degree in Athletic Training but would love to learn how i could become a football coach. I love the game and have a pure passion and desire for it. What do I have to do to become a coach in any level of the game? Do I have to have a college degree and be a high school teacher or can I just go into coaching? And could you recommend some books for me to read to increase my understanding of this wonderful game? Thanks a bunch!   (Matt from Indiana)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. It is always good to meet someone interested in coaching. You will probably have to be a substitute teacher to get your foot in the door. George Allen has an excellent book on special teams, I would suggest it (George Allen's Guide to Special Teams). Also check the local paper for jobs as well as go to the local school boards and make someone hire you. Good luck and please let me know if I can help. You will need a degree to teach and at least 60 credits to sub.

Question:

Hey coach, I'm a 13 yr old 8th grader at MMS. I'm about 5'1", I squat 250 bench 140 and I calve raise so much that when I put full weight on the machine I have to add 2 45 lb weights to the top of it. I weigh 157 lbs. I run a 4.9 40 but coach still refuses to start me at FB. He puts me as a DE in the 2nd half and stuff like that. I'm actually really good at that but I'm even better as a FB. Why won't coach put me there if I average 13.2 yard carries when the 1st string averages only like 3-4 yrds.?   (Diego from Murphysboro, IL)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I will NEVER second guess another coach. Try asking him about why you are not playing and don't be afraid of the truth either. What he says may hurt your feelings so be prepared. Good luck.

Question:

What should a division 1 runningback be able to do as far as lifting weights and speed?   (Matt from Kansas City, MO)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I'm not sure if there is any weight requirement. Just work as hard as you can because if you are lucky enough to play DI then they will train you the way they want you. Good luck.

Question:

Hello coach my name is Brian Jones. I attend Wade Hampton High School in Greenville, SC. I play rb. I'm about 5'6 and run about 4.7 in the 40. And I was just wondering if you knew any drills for me. I'm freshman and i'm one of the fastest freshman but there's this boy Cortney Croft and everybody says there's one way I can start over him. I know you should do what's best for the team and everything but the thing is that I work harder than he does a lot harder. Cortney Croft is stronger than me but I'm a little faster than he is. I also think he is a little quicker than me also. What should I do?   (Brian from Greenville, SC)

Answer:

Work as hard as you can this summer to improve your strength. Make sure you are in the coach's face all summer so you can prove to him how bad you want to play. Good Luck to you.

Question:

Coach, is the use of an endzone camera permitted at the high school level in the state of NJ?   (Wex from Middletown, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Yes you can if you can afford it.

Question:

Hey coach, I'm 24 years old and I finally figured out what it is I want to do with my life. I want to become a head football coach. I played high school ball, but have no college level experience. I'm currently playing semi-pro with the San Diego Saints. This is my second year. Could you give me any advice to improve my resume? Also what requirements are needed to start at the junior high or high school level? Basically, where should I start?   (Jason from San Diego, CA)

Answer:

Thanks for you support of Ask the Football Coach. I would suggest that you get some college credits. You might want to start by substituting at the local high school. You could also ask the coach if you could volunteer and help out. Good Luck because our profession needs some young people that are hungry to be the best.

Question:

What's the difference between the free safty and strong safety? What's the difference between a 3-4 defense and a 4-3 defense. One better than than the other in passing or running situations?   (Lenny from New York, NY)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. The free safety is better at covering receivers and the strong safety will be more involved in the run game. The strong safety usually lines up on the strong side of the offense and the free safety is on the weak side.

As far as the 3-4 and the 4-3, one has three down linemen and the other has four. The defense you run is determined by the personnel you have. The 3-4 or the 4-3 can both be very effective against the run and the pass as well. Hope I answered your questions and Good Luck!

Question:

I am going to be a sophomore in high school this year, and I am a 6'4 225 pound offensive guard. As of now I can bench press 235 squat 340 and deadlift 405. I run a 5.1 forty. My school doesn't have a great history of sending students to div.1a schools because we have been kind of mediocre and are only a 3a. The doctors are saying that I should be 6'6 and i am shooting for 300 lbs as a senior. Do I have a chance at a major university with the school that I am at?   (Daniel from Cullman, AL)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. Remember that if you are good enough they will find you and all you need to do is to play as hard as possible and the coaches will find you.

You could help yourself by making a highlight tape of yourself and sending all of your transcripts along with it. Good Luck and let me know if I can be of any help.

Question:

Coach, my senior year of 2002, I dropped out of High School because of very personal reasons. I was a stand out athlete in Football starting both ways at tailback and corner, 5'8 165, bench (250), squat (410), PC(210), 40(4.51), vertical (38-40). 2001 1st team all-district8-4A junior year. 2002 only played in 4 games can't remember stats. I really love the game. I can't even explain to you how much I miss playing. At the begining of this year,I enrolled into James Madison High School, a program through Professional Career Development Institute,so I can get a Nationally Accredited High School Diploma. I also have a Tuition Waiver from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to attend any state supported university. My goal is to go to college and walk-on the football team. I am 100% sure I can make the team! I really want to go to the University of Houston to play for Coach Art Briles. I am really on my own and thought maybe you could help me by telling me how I could find someone to help me reach my dream before it's to late? How do I apply for college? How much should I study? How do I walk-on? It's been 3 years or more since I have played in a game or worked out (Football Work-out). How hard, often should I lift and run?   (Darrion from Houston, TX)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. That is a lot to handle at once. Let me start by stating that make sure you have your personal life together before you venture off into college.

It is important that you get as much of your game tape as possible so the coaches can at least see you play. Call your old school and ask for some tape. If you can't get any then you might have to go on campus and just try-out for the team. I would also suggest that you get your transcripts so you can get into school.

After you get enrolled, go to the football office and ask to speak to one of the coaches and tell them your story and your desire to get back on the field.

It will not be easy but if you do what you feel you are capable of then you should have no problem going to school and walking on the football team.

Please keep in touch and let me know how things turn out and if I can be of any further help to you. Good Luck!

Question:

I'm 5'8, 190 lb but they tell me I look like 170. im going to be a sophomore at my school. My coach told that there's a good possibility that I would start at fb and backup the mlb. My maxes in lifting are bench 235, quat 360, dead lift 450, and my power clean is 185. Do you think those are good numbers for me? Thanks for your help.   (Wilson from Lawrence, MA)

Now Iım going to be a freshman. I weigh 145 and Iım 5'9. I timed 6.58 on the 40 when I was in 8th. Iıve gotten a lot faster since then because Iıve been running sprints and I went to a 1 month training camp during the summer where we ran 7 miles a day at 4 am, plus we ran all types of sprints there. This year Iıve been thinking about going out for running back and defensive end. Do you think Iım the right size and speed for that position or do you think I have to improve my speed?   (Habib from Milford, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I do not want to speak for your coach. If I were you I would ask the coach what position he thinks you would help the team win games. Good Luck.

Question:

Hello, I will be 13 in Decmember and my accuracy is very good but I need to know something about distance. Do coaches look for distance? I can throw 30 yards at max and I want to know if that is average or below average? I would also like to know how I can improve my throwing distance because I have been lifting weights and it has been improving my distance a lot but I didnt know if you knew any special excercises I could do to improve my throwing distance as QB. Thank you so much for your time!   (Mike from Loveland, CO)

Question:

My son is being recruited by several different colleges offering full football scholarships. In order to choose the correct college to ensure that he will get proper playing time, what are some questions that I need to ask the recruiters?   (Patricia from Sumter, SC)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. Being recruited is a very exciting and difficult process to go through. It is important that you are informed about what is going on.

One question you should ask is how many players do they have at the position he is playing? Will they redshirt him? What year are the players who will play in front of him?

These are a few questions you can ask. Be aware that it is very likely that your son will be redshirted and have to sit out his first year. This is a common practice among colleges.

You can go to www.ncaa.org and they have more information about getting recruited. Be sure that your son applies for the NCAA clearinghouse as soon as school starts. Good luck and let me know how you guys make out.

Question:

I am a 5'9" 255lbs lineman. I bench 170 squat 300 and deadlift 300 and I'm going to be a junior in high school. I was wondering if I would be able to play fullback for my high school football team. I think I run a 40 in 5.8.   (Matt from Woodlake, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I would suggest that you work on sprinting. You need to run fast if you want to run faster. I would suggesst sprints: 5-100yd, 7-50yd, and 9-20yd twice a week. Good Luck.

Question:

I played football for 3 years. I'm good but I want to get better. And I don't know what drills I should do. I'm 11 please e-mail me back.   (Donte from California)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. I would suggest that you go to the library and look for books on football drills that may help you. Also go ask your coach and he may be able to give you some. If that all fails, write me back and I will try to give you some for the position that you want to play. Good Luck.

Question:

Hey, I'm 14 years old and going to be a freshman next year. I plan on playing for the freshman team at St. John's. I've never played organized football before and I want to play quarterback. Will it make a difference or not if I have never played before? Also how can I throw the ball farther?   (Mike from Matawan, NJ)

Answer:

I think it is important that you go out and give your best. It won't matter to the coach if you played before as long as you are coachable and take instruction well. Good Luck and tell Coach Amible that I said hello.

Question:

Dear Coach, I am 26 years old 5'11" 204lbs. and hoping to get a shot at making a team in the NFL. I played college ball at Troy State. I play running back. What should I do to increase my 40 yard speed besides lifting weights and sprinting?   (Moreo from Dozier, AL)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. I would suggest that you run and lift a lot. This is a good piece of advice to those that want to play in the NFL. Remember that the NFL is a job and these guys have families to feed. If you are not out there trying to feed someone else then that might not be the place for you. Good luck as you pursue your dreams. Maybe you could get me some tickets.

Question:

Hello Coach, I have a son who's 6'8" tall and 300 lbs. and he'll be a senior come fall 2004. He ran a 5.6 on his 40yard dash at the Nike Camp at UVa. and benched 185lbs. 12 times and he was very disappointed. He has letters from several Div.1 schools and has also visited several schools that seemed impressed, but he feels he's racing against time being that he'll be a senior and he needs to get his strength up and his speed. So coach, this is all new to me, so can you tell me what type of exercises would benefit him to increase his speed and strength, I was thinking for his cardio, running up the football stadium stairs at the local university. Please help.   (Greg from Virginia Beach, VA)

Answer:

Thanks for your question and support of Ask the Football Coach. If your son has those credentials that you have talked about then he should be fine. Sorry it took so long but even a football coach needs a vacation. Good luck!

What should I do to blank out everyone else's comments?   (Darris from Camden, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. My advice would be to focus so much on what you are trying to accomplish that you don't have time for negative people or their thoughts of you. Good Luck!

Question:

Hi Coach, My eight year old son has played football for two years now. Last year we got presciption sport goggles due to his vision but he was unable to wear them beacuse his helmet pushed them down. They were just to big and bulky. I heard they make prescription visors for the helmets. Is this true and where would I go to find one? Thanks.   (Sherry from Margate, FL)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. Sorry for the delay. I am not sure of where he could get a prescription visor. I would guess to check with the eye doctor because he/she should be able to direct to something like that.

My suggestion would be to get him to wear contact lenses. He should be old enough to wear them. Good luck to you and your son.

Question:

What would a good work out be over the summer for a first time football player in high school?   (Mike from Colby, KS)

Answer:

Look through the archives, I have a workout on there. You should not try to over do it but you should get stronger as you work out. Good Luck.

Question:

Dear Coach, I'm 13 and going to play varsity next season. I wanted to know how to change fat into muscle w/o lifting weights and stunting my growth.   (Anthony from Modesto, CA)

Answer:

LIFTING WEIGHTS WILL NOT STUNT YOUR GROWTH. Go to the library and get a book on muscle development and check it out for yourself.

Question:

Hi coach, I have a question about leg pads for football. Without equipment I run a 4.4 but with it I run a 4.78. My coaches said there's no way that pads should slow me down this much so we tested different things and we found out that it's the legs pads. I see in college and in the NFL that they have very thin leg pads, but they seem like they don't protect the leg cause they're so small. I'm a junior in high school and I play TB and SS. What type of pads would you suggest? In other words are thin pads more dangerous? Thank you.   (James from Buffalo, NY)

Answer:

I would suggest that you wear the legal equipment that you need to in order to compete. Maybe that is just a mental block that you face when you put pads on. Wear legal pads. Safety first.

Question:

Coach, in July I will be attending NRSA combine for high school football. I was watching the NFL network this morning and the QB from Tulane was talking about how they started to drink lots of water before weigh-in at the NFL combine so they are heavier, I was also told to do the same, the problem is that all within 4 hrs so would drinking lots of water the day of the combine hurt me in terms of running the 40? I am a 170lb TB 5'10" running a 4.61.   (Jimmie from Niagara Falls, NY)

Answer:

You need to be hydrated so you can perform at your peak. I would not suggest drinking so much water that you are running to the bathroom faster than you are running sprints.

Question:

Dear coach, I'm a 185 defensive tackle for RV. I'm quick and strong and I get off the ball fast, but how can i work my way out of being double teamed? I'm great on one on one situations and my speed helps me in my pass rush.   (Preston from Westampton, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. I would suggest that you go to a camp this summer and have them teach you some skills. You could also ask your coach to give you a couple of pads that you could have some of your team mates use them to help you. You should work on your speed off the ball with some stance and starts. I wish you good luck this season.

Question:

Dear coach, I was wondering to what effect does hand size and grip strength have in your ability to grasp and throw a football? I can hold a high school sized football pretty easy but when I hold a pro football it is harder to hold and run with. I don't know if this has to do with the size of the laces or not. Also I measured my hand and the size from pinky to thumb is 9 and 4/8 inches and the length of my hand is about 8 and 4/8 inches. I would like to know if my hand is a little small for the ball or if my problem is something else like grip. Thank you for your help.   (Nwora from Canton, OH)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. I would think that the size of your hands would effect your ability to grip and throw a football. One thing that you can do is to get a solid rubber ball and walk around all day and just squeeze it. This will help improve your grip. Good Luck!

Question:

My son was a star quarterback in high school. Broke school records that were held since 1982. He took a year off of college and didn't apply to any schools, for personal reasons of the sickness of his grandpa. Since he took a year off of school do you think any college would accept him to play football, and if they would how do we go about doing it? And is there any camps he can go to or training he could get? He would like to go to a D-1 school. He is applying at TCU and Wyoming State. Anything you can help us with would be appreciated.   (Gloria from Menominee, MI)

Answer:

Thanks for you support of Ask the Football Coach. Your son should probably put together a highlight tape of him from high school. He should also plan a visit to the schools he is interested in. Be very honest with the coaches about his situation and I am sure that they will work with him the best they can. Please let me know how he makes out. Good Luck to both of you.

Question:

Hey coach, I hope you can answer my questions. First question: is it possible to cut a half second off your 40 time? My second question is how fast do you have to be on the 40 to play Div-I college football?   (Jeff from Atlanta, GA)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. I will not say that it is impossible to cut your forty time in half but it will be very difficult. In order to run faster, you must run faster. You will no doubt need some speed in order to play DI but I really don't think there is a certain speed they look for. I think it is more important how good a player you are. Good Luck!

Question:

Hello Coach Sellers! I'm a senior for Port Richmond high school. This will be my third year playing organized football. I'm 5'10", 194 pds, bench press 255, squat 395. I want to play inside linebacker this year. I just wanted to ask you do you know any good programs for me to follow in order to get faster because I ran a slow 4.9 in the 40.   (Demetrius from Norfolk, VA)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. I will give you a suggestion. Try to work out with the track team at your school. If that can't work then ask the track coach at your school for some sprint workouts. This will improve your speed. The old saying goes, In order to run faster you must run faster. Good Luck!

Question:

I know I'm not from New Jersey but I would love some advice. I'm a sr in high school and I'm going to be attending Brockport or Cortland Unniversity and playing football for them. I am 5'7" about 160lbs...both coaches have scouted me out and like what they see but I know I still need to improve. I am having trouble finding workout routines that suit me. I seem to get bored with them real quick. What are some of the best workouts for cornerbacks to do? Thanks you for your time.   (Bill from Colonie, NY)

Answer:

I suggest that you find as many drills or workouts that you can and then combine them into one that will keep you motivated. Good Luck.

Get a couple of your buddies to go out with you and you can practice throwing to them.

Question:

I am an 8th grade quarterback and I lift 135 pounds, I can throw far but I am a little slower than the other backs at my school. I run a 5.6 in a forty. How can I run faster? Do you think that I am quarterback material?   (Jake from Waxahachie)

Question:

Dear Coach, right now I'm a 5'10" 265LB sophomore. I bench 265LB and squat about 515LB. I've been in the weight room transform all my fat into muscle. I have never played organized football though I was on the team this season as a lineman. I didn't start though because I didn't really understand football at first. Anyways our team went 1-9. Now I understand Football alot better. My goal is to play Running Back or Fullback in the upcoming season. I'm fast but I have poor endurance. What kind of drills can I do to build up endurance, agility and speed? Also could size be an advantage at playing running back?   (Justin from Wheaton)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I suggest that you have a meeting with your coach and ask him what position he would like you to play and where you will more help the team. He should also be able to give you some drills to help you. Good Luck.

I am 14 years old and I weigh 186 pounds. Answer:

Thanks for your question. In order to throw farther you must go out two to three times a week and throw to some of your teammates. Check into the University of Alabama, UAB they should have some camps. You could look on their websites and get camp info. Good luck.

Question:

Hi, I have a few question to ask , I'm doing a research paper for my english class over the profession I would like to do in the future, my first question is what kind of schooling is needed to be a football coach? What are some things that I may need to know about coaching (meaning aspects, of plays and those kinds of things anything that I would really need to know) well thank , this will be greatly appreciated if you return some info to me.   (Chad from Eudora, KS)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of ask the football coach. In order to become a high school coach like myself, you will have to graduate from a four year college. It is also likely that someone could become a coach without the degree but that rarely happens because a good administration will want their football coach in the building.

That is not to say that one of the assistants can't be from outside but the head coach usually is from the teaching staff.

As far as formal training goes, it will greatly improve your coaching ability if you have played previously. Although it is not a requirement it is helpful. Another thing that will help you is attendance at various coaching clinics throughout the country.

I hope this helps. If not just drop me a line. Thanks and good luck to you.

Question:

Coach I am a freshman wide receiver at south point, but I want to increase my ability to catch how can I do that? I have one more question I am 6'4" 195 pounds I squat 320 and run a 4.81 forty, I work out everyday benching and squating on mondays, agility drills on tuesday, power cleans on wednesday, agility on thursday, and we do the same as monday on fridays, what else can I do to get faster?   (Jerrell from South Point, OH)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. You might want to go out and try to run for the track team at your school. If you don't want to do that then just go out and do some type of sprint workout. Good Luck.

Question:

Hey coach, I am 5'7" 160 and I play QB. I played jv this year as a sophmore. And I threw 10td/3int in nine games. I am small but I can throw accurate. How can I strengthen my arm and become a quicker QB?   (Shawn from Pennsauken, NJ)

Question:

Are tinted visors allowed w/o prescription in high school football specifically here in New Jersey?   (RJ from Palmyra, NJ)

Answer:

I don't believe that you can play in the state of New Jersey with a tinted visor on. The only visors that are allowed are clear ones.

Question:

I am in the eighth grade and I started quarterback for my school and I was a good quarterback and I scored 4 touchdowns in 6 games. Next year I will be in high school. My only thing is that right now I am only 5'6",130 pounds, I can throw 50 yards, and I run a 4.7 in the 40. I really do love the position and want to stick with it. I am also lifting 100 pounds maximum on the bar. Please tell me what you think and give me suggestions.   (Jake from Tampa Bay, FL)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. My advice would be to pursue your dreams. If you want to be a QB then stick with it. But also know that you must be willing to play somewhere else if it is going to benefit the team. Good Luck.

Question:

I'm 23 years old in high school, I never played football but I still wanna go to college to play ball but most coaches say they need a highlight tape, what should I do? Am I too old to be a 23 year old freshmen what should I do?   (Kevin from Pleasantville, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. You might need to go to the coaches and explain your situation to them. They might be willing to let you walk on or come in the spring for some type of open try out. You are going to have to be consistent in your quest to play because it is not everyday that someone just walks in off the street and wants to play football. Good luck to you.

Question:

Coach I run a 4.8 forty and I was wondering how I could get it down to a 4.5 by next season. Is it possible?   (Deshawn from Maple Shade, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. In order to cut that much time off of your forty yard dash, you have to work really hard. Try to concentrate on your form as well as the speed. You should also continue to lift weights and do some agility drills because football is not all how fast someone is but how well they move also. Good Luck!

Question:

Coach, I am a junior at Early Co. High and play 2nd string linebacker. I'm 6'1" and 190 lbs. I need to know how I can gain as much weight as possible. Do you know any ways I can gain anymore weight? I work hard at linebacker and I try as much as possible to show my best to the coaches. But my linebacker coach wants me to be the best. If I make one mistake he takes me out , he never does that to the other players. I'm trying to beat the 1st string linebacker, but it's hard because of my coach. What do you think my coach wants of me? Please help me out coach.   (Chris from Blakley, GA)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I would suggest that you get some protein and after each meal and your workout that you drink a protein shake. This will help you gain muscle mass instead of just empty calories. Good Luck.

Question:

Hey coach, I was wondering I am a 6'4" 260 freshman, I bench 315 pounds squat 410, I was wondering my 40 time is a little slow its a 5.0, I mean I know it's good enough for some people, but for me nothing satifies my thirst for getting better and beating everyone at what I am good at and thats offensive line. I started both sides on freshman team and soph, what prevented me from varsity was Illinois Catholic rules no freshman on varsity, but to get to the point how can I get faster and I know to run fast I must run fast but is there any work out drill I can do to get faster and build my legs? Thanks and I appreciate anything you have to help me.   (Justin from Manteno, IL)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. In order to run faster, you have to run faster. Look through to questions on the page, I have answered that one several times but for you I will try again.

Mon-Wed. Jog 2 miles
Tues-Thurs. Sprints
2-400
4-200
6-100
8-50

That should help you out. Also try out for the track team. That will help as well. Good Luck.

Question:

Coach, what is the ideal kick-off in football? Is it through the end zone, the end zone, or somewhere between the 1 and 20 yard line if you have a good special teams unit? Is it the same in college and pro? Can college kids kick the ball further than pros? Thanks Coach.   (Steve from Tulsa, OK)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Most coaches would probably prefer to have the ball kicked through the end zone. Some like to have it kicked short and their team make a great tackle. It all depends on who you are talking to.

Question:

Hey coach, if you were 5'11" and weighed 150 and were a freshman in high school and ran a 4.7, what do you think I'd need to become a better tailback? Thank you.   (Cedric from Los Angeles, CA)

My suggestion would be to join the track team and increase your speed. Also lift weights four to five times a week. Good luck!

Hey coach, I'm 20 years old and my dream is to play football whether it's pro or any other organized football programs. I played when I was in school but that's it. Also I never went to college and I dropped out of high school but the thing is that I know I am good enough to make it on a team. I'm 5'8" and 187 lbs. Something tells me that I was made to play this sport I just need a little help getting started or maybe if I had a coach to help me and turn me into the perfect football player and teach me everything there is too know about the sport. I am very dedicated and have never felt so strongly about anything in my life. So if you have any advice how to get me started so I can show someone my abilities and make them see what I could bring to the table. It's hard being a nobody and trying to be the best at something you know in heart you were born to do. I just dont know where to start. Thanx, hope to hear from you soon, desperatly waiting my chance.   (Wagner from Lawrence, MA)

Also is you want to go back to college, go to a community college and obtain your diploma or GED and then you might be able to go a college a play. Good luck and let me know how you make out.

Question:

Coach, I am a receiver for my high school on the JV team... I'm in 9th grade and have started every game...I have the greatest hands any one could ever see but my speed isn't all that great...I'm not slow but I'm not fast... Our season ended about a month ago, so do you have any adivce or tips for me on getting faster for next season? I have a field up the street from me that is about 35 yards long, do you have any tips on me getting faster for that size of field I can work on? Thats the only area I can train at... also, would running a hill 4 days a week make me any faster? I really apreciate your time and effort, thanks again!   (Jeremy from Charlotte, NC)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. That field is plenty to run sprints on. I would suggest that you join the track team at your school. Being on the track team will increase your speed. Good Luck!

Question:

Hey Coach, As a Jr in HS, many D-I schools such as Pitt, Iowa, BC and Wisconsin showed interest in me. At the time I didn't have the desire to play at the level and squandered away the opportunity. I half heartedly completed my Sr. Yr but just a few D-III schools even showed interest. I didnt play ball my freshman yr but I came out for the time at the D-III school I ended up going to as a sophmore and had a good season at DB. Coach I am 6'1", 185 lbs and run a 4.4 40. Based on the interest that was put my way as a Jr, I know I can play D-I ball...I'm still getting stronger. I applied to a few schools and made some contacts. I have been accepted to a high profile Big 12 school and am in the process of sending film to them....What is your take on my situation? Thanks a lot.   (G.K. from Bridgewater, MA)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I am not sure of why you are trying to transfer to another school. if you like where you go to school and it will provide you with a good education, then stay there. If you goal is to play Division I football then pursue your dreams. Good luck.

Question:

I am doing a report on, "Should there be mandatory steroid testing for high-school football players?" I would like to know how you feel on this hot topic. I believe the strongest answers I can get are from football players and coaches themselves. Please e-mail me back a.s.a.p. with your thoughts. Thank you so much.   (Jessie from Omaha, NE)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. My stance on this issue is very strong. If you are going to test athletes for steroids then you should test the entire school. I don't agree with the fact that the students who are doing the most for the school have to be the ones that are tested. Test the student who is failing every class and gets in trouble all the time.

Don't get me wrong, there is absolutely no place in high school athletics for ANY type of drug use but hold the entire student body accountable for their actions. Thanks and good luck with your report.

Question:

I'm 5'7" 180 and use to play tight end. This year I might switch to guard. Do you think this is good for me?   (Bill from Bellmawr, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Remember that if playing TE will make you the third team one or playing guard will make you a starter then I suggest that you go where you will get some playing time. Good Luck.

Question:

Hello coach, I will be joining the Air Force after my high school career, but I plan to go to college after. I was wondering if it would be possible to attend the Air Force and then play for a Division 1 school and still be eligible for the draft. If not, what other ways can I still strive to play professional football after I attend the Air Force? Thank you.   (Jimmie from Niagara Falls, NY)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. You will have just a good a shot as anyone to go to the pros after the service. I commend you for helping to defend our great country. Because of the age you will be, you might want to look at any Division II or III programs because the age won't matter. Go to the NCAA.org web site and check on the eligibility status for someone coming from the service. Thanks and Good luck. God Bless the USA!

Question:

Coach, I've played tight end all my life. I'm a pretty good blocker, and pretty strong. However, because I'm a hair over 6' I'm not tall enough to play tight end in college. I am a senior. I was thinking that I also have the build for a fullback (6', 225, 4.9 40 yd). Is this move from tight end to fullback feasible? Also, do I need to be doing anything different in my offseason workouts?   (Chris from PA)

Answer:

You will be fine with the work out that you are doing. Did a coach recruiting you tell you that you were too short to be a tight end in college? Try it. What's the worst thing that could happen to you? They move you to fullback. Good Luck!

Question:

Hey coach, I did what you said about the tapes. I did not have any really good game tapes because my school went 0-40 in my career as a player there, four years and not one win, I only scored one td my whole career too. Do you think I should with my size 6'0" and 205 should I consider playing fullback? or maybe kick returner? I do run the forty in 4.79. What is wrong with these people, I can play ball if they just give me a chance. This fall I will attend the University of Memphis. I plan to walk on there, is that a good thing?   (Curtis from Williston, TN)

Answer:

You probably need to call the football office and talk to one of the coaches about walking on. I am pretty sure that they have an open try out for those who want to walk on. Good Luck.

Question:

What do you think is a good football wide reciever size and speed in high school?   (Ricci from Auburn, WA)

Answer:

Thanks for your support. I think if a receiver has the ability to catch the ball, then his size shouldn't matter. Good Luck to you.

Question:

My son just finished his freshman year playing high school football. He is considering what would be the best routine toward preparing for next seaon? He is a lineman that has slightly above average strength and has below average speed (amongst linemen). He is 5'7" at 185 lbs and is 14 years old. Can you suggest a routine for agility improvement? Thank you.   (Kelly from Westfield, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. I would suggest that your son gets in the weight room as soon as possible. Here are some exercises that he should concentrate on:

Cleans, Squats, Bench Press, and Military Press.

He should be able to go to his coach and get the routine that the rest of the team is using. Good luck to you and your son.

Question:

Hi coach, I'm a 20 year old college player at Delaware Valley College (played at Eastern in HS). I'm looking for the best way to get into coaching after I grad. I'm not really interested in teaching so I would probaly fit better at the college level. I was just wondering if you had any advice for me for when graduation is near. Also if there are any summer camps I could work at to gain more experience. I play O line in college and a little tight end. In HS I pretty much covered every postion except WR and DB. Thank you for your time.   (Matt from Berlin, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. Start with your own college coach. He should be able to get you in touch with many different schools that may be looking for coaches. Also it would be a good idea to go to the AFCA annual convention. Go to their website for the information: www.afca.org

Good luck with you coaching career.

Question:

Hi Coach, My nephew is a 6ft. 220 lb (14yr.old) freshman who just started playing football this year (Defensive nose tackle). He loves the game but has no previous football knowledge and the coach makes the kids feel stupid if they ask questions or don't understand the terms in the X and o's. How can he learn the terms and are there any lineman instructional videos on technique and how-to play books? Thanks.   (Jim from Findlay, OH)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I would suggest a trip to any Barnes and Noble Bookstore or any other major book store and go to the sport section and read about the x's and o's of the game (Also check out the South Jersey Sports Online Bookstore). Tell your nephew to go ask one of the assistant coaches who might have a little more time to sit down and answer questions. Good luck to you and your nephew.

Question:

Coach, I am a Junior Offensive Guard 6'5" 275lbs... I have a 3.9 GPA and am planning on going to college. First problem - I am in a small school with a relatively poor record. Any suggestions?

Second - I am very concerned about Team Spirit - Non-athletes say and do things which make us doubt our skills and the community support is marginal. What can we as players do to remedy this?   (Bill from Fort Stockton, TX)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. If you are a good football player, then coaches will find you. Ask your coach if any coaches have called about you. Also know that you have played other coaches this year and they will tell the college coaches about you.

As far as the community is concerned please do not let people tear you down. Remember that football is life. When things are tough you must hang in there and continue to strive to do your best. Good Luck.

Question:

Well I hope you can send the answer to my question on time. The problem is that I want to quit football. I think because I got discouraged and decided to focus more on cars, engines, fixing them up etc. Well I played Middle School for Rhodes. And I loved that team, we came out in first place. I played my freshman year and played BENCH the offseason games and first 3 games. I only started 3 games because the player that played that position was hurt. I felt left out but I never talked to the coach. I feel that I'm just not good no more. I'm not big and tall like the other players. I'm 5'7" and weigh 200 lbs. Another reason is that the team I'm playing with is made up of different schools and the other players don't get along. They tell me that I'm to short and not good enough. I won't remember this freshman year only M.S. football where I started every game and shine like a star in the night sky. I hope you can help me.   (Ivan from San Antonio, TX)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. The advice I will give you is to hang in there and keep striving for what you want. Football is a great teacher of men. Many of the lessons that you are learning today will carry you into the future. Keep your head up. Good Luck!

Question:

Hey I am 19 years old, I am 6'0" and 205 lbs. I run the forty in 4.79 and bench 305 and squat 395. What are some ways to get my size up? I played tight end in high school but I know I am too short to play in college. What position do you think I should try for and at what level school should I try? I graduated in 2002 then joined the navy but I will be out in 2 months and I want to play football again. What should i do?   (Curtis from Williston, TN)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. You should begin by getting your high school transcripts and some tape of you playing. Put together a package to send to ten colleges that you are interested in. I suggest that you pick ten schools that you honestly feel that you can play at. Good Luck.

Question:

I just started playing football 2 years ago. I have been playing center on my 6th-8th grade team. I want to try out for the freshman team at Steinert, and would like to go to a football camp in the New Jersey area to improve/learn more skills. I think I will try for an offensive position. Can you suggest any summer camps? Thank you.   (Scott from Hamilton Twp., NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the football Coach. I will give you three camps to check out. One try my good friend Coach Greg Schiano at Rutgers. Two you can check on my mentor in Coach Eric Hamilton from the College of New Jersey, and lastly check out another one of my friends in Coach Jay Accorsi at Rowan University.

They all offer camps in the summer. Just go to their websites or just give them a call to find out more info on the camps. Good luck to you.

Any advice would help, thank you.   (James from Syracuse, NY)

Answer:

Okay try this:

Question:

I have played 6 years of Pop Warner, 4 years of football camp, 1 year of speed camp. Starting Fullback, linebacker, and special teams for my freshman team this year. I run a 4.75. I just turned 14 years old, 5'8" and 155 pounds. How much faster do I need to be to get into a good college D-2 or D-1? (Hoping with age my size will improve) My goal is to play college ball. Does it help to get noticed at football camps? I am from an average size town. I play for an average size school as well. We play Div2 ball in the DCL division. Our school does ok in football, I am wondering how I can get my name out there, and when it may be a good time to do this? I feel I am above average player and intend to keep going to camps to keep learning the skills that I need. Do recruiting services really work? Any tips will be helpful. Thanks.   (Sean from Massachusetts)

Answer:

Thanks for your questions. To help start answering your questions, I would suggest that you attend camp at maybe two of the schools your are interested in. One thing about today's athletes is some of them aim too high without looking at some of the smallers schools. Know your goal. Is your goal to play Div. I football or is your goal to play football in college?

To play Div. I football, you have to be a dominant player on your team. Don't discount the education you would receive at a smaller school. Write down some schools in the area and get in touch with their coaches and find out when camp is and try to attend. Stay focused on your goal. Good luck.

Question:

Dear Coach, I am 15 year old offensive linemen playing JV football. I weigh 215 and would like to increase my weight and speed. Our varsity football was second in state last year, so I am going to have alot of competition. I was wondering if you could send me a workout routine to build muscle and some ways to improve my speed. Thank you for your time.   (Mark from Phoenix, AZ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Ask your coach about the routine that the team is using. It is important that the team does the same workout as to build some unity. If you don't have a workout then email me back. Good luck.

Question:

Hey Coach, I have been searching the internet for a way to approach my coach about a concern I have. I am a sophomore and I have great competition in my class. The 3 of us have grown up together but this week Adam was moved up to our first JV team due to injury. Adam has not done well at all this year and I know I'm the better QB. I have had a great season so far, I have had 3 games with 300 yds, 0 interceptions. I do not understand why he is getting the chance when he hasn't earned it. How should I make sure my coach knows I'm working harder than him, but not sound like I'm complaining?   (Steve from TX)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Hang in there and continue to work as hard as you can. Just remember that when you get your chance, take full advantage of it. Good luck.

Question:

Dear coach, I have a 14-yr-old son that just started freshman football at Los Alamitos high school. My son kyle, has been playing Pop Warner for the last four years. The coaches have been begging him to lose a little weight and come back to Pop Warner. Kyle was an outstanding QB he throws a perfect ball, and can catch anything from any distance. He was so excited about starting freshman football, but unfortunately his dreams have turned into frustration and disappointment. You see there are 72 boys on the team.

Kyle is 5'8" 170 lbs. very average but very strong, but there are boys on the team that are 6'3" and 220 lbs. ! with beards! I keep telling my husband there's no way those boys are 14, it's almost scary!.

They have played 7 games and Kyle along with about 40 other boys have never been able to have even one play. Head coach seems to be set on one thing, winning! which I do understand, but if you could see the look on those boys faces! They work so hard at practice, with no reward! It's as if the coach has put a banner on their backs saying YOU'RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH. I see Kyle losing his self esteem and as a parent it's very frustrating. I've spoken with the assistant coaches, and they do not agree with the head coaches policy, they think every boy on the team should get a chance to play. Could you please give me your thought on this situation? I would truly appreciate it.

Thank You.   (Suzanne from Seal Beach, CA)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. This is a tough one to answer because as a coach it is important to put the best players on the field. As a parent, I can understand wanting to see your child play.

The coach has to be concerned with the welfare of all the players on the team, where you as the parent are a little selfish in dealing with the situation which isn't a totally bad thing.

Your son should stay on the team and learn from the experience. There are going to be times in life where things will not always go the way you want them to, so you have to hang in there and see it through.

Good luck to you and your son.

Question:

I am writing to you on behalf of my boyfriend. He would like to know how you can apply to become a High School Football coach. He is a correctional officer so he has college credits. Please if you have any information let me know.   (Lanel from Toms River, NJ)

Answer:

What he will probably need to do is to go to the county office of education and get a substitute certification. At the same time, he can go to the local high school and maybe ask to volunteer and then he might be able to get a job that way. Also he can just check the papers and apply for any assistant football coaching openings that may come up. Also go to www.njsiaa.org and look under fall coaching openings. Good luck.

Question:

I'm 13 and the 8th grade, I'm 5'3" and 140 pounds, could I start on the o-line? I'm a under sized o-linemen, how do I block the bigger guys?   (Charles from St. Louis, MO)

Answer:

You have to give me more than that. You could play anywhere you wanted to if you had the desire to do so. Stay low and give it your all. Thanks for your question. Good Luck.

Question:

Earlier you told me to run faster you have to run fast, I don't really get that, I need some better advice. And what if I can't make the track team or get the coaches to give me drills, then what should I do? I am trying to get faster and bigger. I play for a rec team because my middle school doesn't have a football team, so I need to know some weight lifting tips! Thank you so much for your time.   (Alex from Centreville, VA)

Answer:

What I mean is that you have to go out and run some sprints at least three times a week. You should try to run some distance the other two days.

Sprint workout- eight 60-yard sprints, ten 40-yard sprints, and ten 20-yard sprints as fast as you can.

Weight lifting- try bench press 3 sets of 5 reps, shoulder press 3 sets of 5 reps, and clean (ask the coach to show you how to do these) 3 sets of 5 reps. Every other day should be enough.

Now good luck.

Question:

Hi coach, I'm a 16 year old 10th grader. I am a left handed kid and i want to be a QB. I don't know about hard strength and stuff. I want to be able to throw the ball further so I can be a QB. I'm 5'9" maybe a little over and 165 pounds. What do I need to do to throw far?   (John from Pembroke Pines, FL)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. You must work on throwing the ball in to be able to throw it further. Get one of your friends to be your receiver and work on passing him the ball. Also go to a camp to enhance your skills.

Question:

Hi, I have been playing grade school football for six years, and I am in the 8 grade. I am 5'8" 203 pounds and I have played offensive tackle every year I play. This year we have new coaches and they put a kid that is 5'5" 110 pounds in the starting offensive tackle position. How can I impress my coaches and have them put me in starting offensive tackle? I am really angry, please help me.   (Kyle from Peoria Heights, IL)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Continue to work hard to get some playing time. Channel that anger into something positive so you can play. If you get in, work hard so you don't lose your spot.

Question:

I've been practicing at quarterback and I don't think I'll make 1st or 2nd string. The coach tried me at defensive back (the position I Want to play) and a big halfback knocked me on my butt, so i don't know if I'll have a chance to play there. I am 5'1" 130 and I'm not big enough to be on our line except for maybe a defensive end. What are some positions I would be good for? Also some drills to become faster. Thank you.   (Tyler from Chappell, NE)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. You can play any position you want. Your heart is what needs to be big enough for you to play. In the spring, try to run track to increase your speed. Good luck.

Question:

Yea I'm going to be a junior this year transferring from Bishop Eustace to Washington Twp. and for some reason no one the coaches have gotten a gold of know exactly what the requirements are for the transfer rule. Supposedly if you get a varsity letter in one school, the next school you have to sit 30 days from Sept. 1 and cannot play in scrimmages, varsity or even jr varsity games... is this true and if not what are the exact requirements?   (Tim from Washington Twp., NJ)

Answer:

Hey, thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you will have to sit out if you did in fact earn a varsity letter and you are not changing residences. Also it is 30 days from the first game. Good luck. You can appeal to the NJSIAA. Go to their web site at www.njsiaa.org for contact information.

Question:

Hi, I'm Lauren and I'm 15 and I'm going to help my jr high school and high school (when I get there in a year) football team by helping the coach. I'm going into 9th grade and I wonder what can I do to to make my first year of coaching a good year with a team who can't win games (0-8 for 2 years I've been at Fairgrounds)?   (Lauren from Nashua, NH)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. The best thing to do is to be positive and try as hard as possible to help out in any way necessary. Good luck. Remember that the coach isn't going out and purposely losing the games. He needs some support.

Question:

Coach, I am quarterback for a jv team. I was wondering how to get faster and be able to throw the ball more precise to my reciver. I am 5'10" freshman and weigh 135. Thank you.   (David from Charleston, SC)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Get out there and just throw the ball to some of your friends who may be receivers. In order to run faster, you need to get out and run some sprints. I suggest that you run 2-100's, 4-60's, and about 10-30's. At least twice a week. Three would help even more.

Question:

Coach, I will be entering my junior year in high school and our school has 4 decent corners who will all be playing corner on varsity. I will be of the 4 people and my coach said we will likely jsut play "cornerback by comittee" where you play matchups with players and sub in like every 2 plays, so I should get a good portion of playing time (prob. more then any of the other corners). My question to you is that I really really want to attend the Nike Camp after the season. I know I am good enough to compete, because at PSU Camp back in June I competed with several players who attened this camp and was jsut as fast and strong as them. I am undersized at 5'8" 160 , but I run a 4.4 (legit) 40 and bench 240. I have been told you must be invited to this NIKE Camp. How can I possibly get my name out so people can notice me to invite me to this. Considering that I should get a good amount of playing time at CB, I just don't know if my stats will be amazing enough to get any attention. What should I do?   (Ryan from Philadelphia, PA)

Answer:

Thank you for your support of Ask the Football Coach. I really think what you should do in your search for a college is to try to get a highlight tape together and pick some schools to send it to.

I will suggest that you no only look at Division I but 1AA and II as well. Even look into some D3's just in case. I think the Nike Camp is by invite only and therefore you should probably get invited.

A good judge of how you being recruited is to list the phone calls that you have received. Any schools that have called you are very interested. Many times the student-athletes have to do some of the recruiting as well.

Make up a highlight tape. Include all of your contact information. Be sure to tell your coach what you are doing as well. He should be of help to you in your search for a college.

Don't worry about the Nike Camp. Just do your thing in your season and you will have colleges knocking down your door.

Let me know how you make out and good luck this season.
