Forwards Sean Greenhalgh, Luke Wiles along with fourth year forward Keith Cromwell, led the Wings in scoring, in a come from behind victory in their season opener, which was also former Philadelphia Wing Gary Gait's debut as the Head Coach of the Colorado Mammoth. |

Phantoms Fall To Hershey, Bears Take 5-1 Win Saturday, December 31, 2005 By Brian Smith The Hershey Bears scored three power play goals en route to a 5-1 win over the Phantoms in an early Saturday evening contest at the GIANT Center on New Year's Eve. Hershey opened the scoring on its initial power play opportunity at 5:57 of the first frame. Colin Forbes was on the doorstep to knock home the rebound of a shot by Mike Green. The Bears picked up their second goal just 38 seconds later when Jared Aulin, standing in the right corner, snapped a long-distance pass to Mark Watton at the top of the left circle. Watton blasted it past Martin Houle at 6:35. Houle was replaced by Rejean Beauchemin at that point after stopping six of the eight shots he saw. |

Haddonfield's Second Half Defense Pushes City Aside Friday, December 30, 2005 By Jerome Michaels The last game on the schedule of the Jameer Nelson Classic boy's basketball tournament held at Cherry Hill East High School would put the talented Burlington City team against the Bulldogs from Haddonfield. The Bulldogs arguably have been labeled as the best team in South Jersey, feature the 7-2 senior center Brian Zoubek. Opposing teams' game play would be to challenge the dominating center inside or find the open shot on the perimeter. The Blue Devils would be successful during the first half, but Haddonfield's the second half defense allowed them to pull away and post a 76-54 decision and capture the Nelson Classic title. |

LEAP Academy's Winning Streak Comes to a Halt Friday, December 30, 2005 By Jerome Michaels It has been a very busy week for those teams participating in the holiday tournaments that take place at the end of the year. For LEAP Academy, they had just completed a tournament in North Jersey and were right back on the court this time participating in the Jameer Nelson Classic held at Cherry Hill East High School. The Lancers would have to defeat a highly ranked St. Anthony boy's basketball team. Right away St. Anthony showed why they are so good with so many talented players on the court. LEAP Academy would have their seven game winning streak ended as St. Anthony would go on and post the 75-53 win. |

Slaney Sets AHL Record Friday, December 30, 2005 By Brian Smith On Friday night at the Wachovia Spectrum 8,612 witnessed history, as with an assist, John Slaney became the American Hockey League's (AHL) all-time leading scoring defenseman. Slaney eclipsed a 41-year old record, logging his 454th career AHL point. The point, however, came in a 4-1 Phantoms loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The Sound Tigers broke the scoreless deadlock at the 16:29 mark of the second period. A puck was chipped high into the air and Sean Bergenheim swung at it with his stick at chest-height. He made contact with the shaft of his stick and was able to send it past Martin Houle to make it a 1-0 game. |

KiXX Blasted in Baltimore, 8-2 Friday, December 30, 2005 By David Deal The Philadelphia KiXX (3-4) closed out 2005 with a 8-2 loss to the Baltimore Blast (5-3) in front of 5,412 fans at the 1st Mariner Arena. Baltimore’s Adauto Neto registered the game winner, unassisted, at 8:22 of the second quarter. Peter Pappas (3-4) took the loss for Philadelphia with 10 saves on 18 chances, while Sanaldo improved to 2-0 with the Blast, turning away nine of the 11 shots he faced. |

Leap Academy's Fourth Quarter Surge the Difference Thursday, December 29, 2005 By Zachary Hibbs There was an inaugural New Jersey Charter School Holiday Tournament held at Scared Heart that involved LEAP Academy University High Charter School from Camden. The Lancers from LEAP Academy advanced to the finals of this tournament against CREATE from Jersey City. Trailing by six points heading into the final quarter, Will Mace would contribute in the Lancers outscoring their opponent 25-8 to take control of this championship game. LEAP would go on to defeat CREATE 78-67 giving head coach Marco Marcos a well deserved victory. |

Griffins Fall as Devils Win Second Straight Thursday, December 29, 2005 By Bob Heller For the second straight game the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's basketball team defeated the Griffins- this time the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College as hot shooting in the first half provided the entire cushion they needed as they cruised to their second straight win, an 85-67 triumph tonight at the Bobby Morgan Arena. The Devils connected on 18 of 32 shots in the first half (56.3%) as they opened up a 50-24 lead at the break. USP also made their first seven shots from beyond the arc and finished the half making seven of eight. USP also was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line in the half. |

Westampton Tech Defeats Moorestown Wednesday, December 28, 2005 By Jerome Michaels Teams are always comparing themselves to their previous year's success or disappointments. But the common goal by players and the coaching staff is how to become better that last year. The effort on the court can determine how pleased or frustrated a coach could be while watching their team performs on the court. In a very competitive boy's basketball game at the Moorestown Invitational, the Quakers would own a two point lead at the break. Westampton Tech would jump out to a lead heading into the final quarter and hold off Moorestown to advance to the finals. Tech would defeat Moorestown 42-38 and give their coach something to smile about. |

Ingram Leads Crusaders to Victory Wednesday, December 28, 2005 By Jerome Michaels Every year preseason predictions are always being made ranking the area's teams, players and sometimes coaches. With everyone's opinion about this year's high school basketball season, no wonder the fans are ready to see which player or players would be advancing to the college ranks as a highly recruited division one player. Julius Ingram would be one of many high school players that have a chance of making South Jersey proud of his accomplishments both on and off the court. In the Moorestown Invitational against West Windsor South, Ingram would help lead Bishop Eustace to a 65-43 victory and advance to the finals of this tournament. |

Lurano Leads Holy Cross' Comeback Wednesday, December 28, 2005 By Susan Hall While many people were enjoying the holidays by extending their mini vacation through the New Years, area high schools were hard at work participating in one of the many basketball tournaments during the break. The Moorestown Invitational was one of those schools serving as a host allowing Holy Cross and Haddon Township to compete on the basketball court. The Lancers would start this game off slowly by only scoring eight first half points against Haddon Township. Christi Lurano would lead the Lancers second half rally and eventually send this game into two overtime periods. Holy Cross would outscore the Lady Hawks by four points in double overtime and defeat Township by a 49-45 margin. |

Quakers Advance To Moorestown Invitational Finals Wednesday, December 28, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty With one team already advancing to the finals, host Moorestown would be looking to match up with Holy Cross in order to win the Moorestown Invitational title. Standing in their way would be the Lady Rams from Riverside. These two Burlington County League teams have played on familiar ground in the past, but this was the start of a new undiscovered season for both teams. Moorestown quickly set the tempo for the game dominating both ends of the court. The Lady Quakers were never in any danger of losing this game as they routed Riverside by a 62-26 score. |

Slaney Ties Record in Victory Wednesday, December 28, 2005 By Brian Smith Phantoms captain John Slaney tied an American Hockey League record for career points by a defenseman Wednesday night when he scored the game-winning goal in a 3-1 win over the Norfolk Admirals. Slaney's sixth goal of the year was his 453rd career AHL point, tying the record set by Steve Kraftcheck between 1949 and 1964. The game was a scoreless affair until 11:28 of the second period, when Norfolk broke the deadlock on a remarkable goal by Milan Bartovic. The winger was squeezed between two Phantoms defensemen as he chased a loose puck into the Philadelphia zone. Bartovic went down in the high slot, but reached out while on his stomach and swatted the puck over the right shoulder of Martin Houle for a 1-0 lead. |
