Thunder Season Ends with Game #5 Loss to Sea Dogs Sunday, September 11, 2005 By Dan Loney Portland got home runs from Hanley Ramirez, Brandon Moss, Jeremy West and Scott Youngbauer en route to a 6-2 win over the Thunder in Game #5 of the Northern Division Championship. The Thunder, who were in the playoffs for the first time since 1999, were eliminated with the defeat. Trenton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st Inning as 2B Gabe Lopez walked, moved to 2nd Base on a passed ball and scored on a double by CF Melky Cabrera. They scored against Portland starter Wade Miller, down on a rehab from the Boston Red Sox. But the Sea Dogs responded with an RBI single from 1B Jeremy West in the bottom of the first. |

Lindenwold's Defense Shuts Down Heights Saturday, September 10, 2005 By Jerome Michaels With the calmness of a stalking predator, the Lions from Lindenwold went out and impressed head coach Derryk Sellers in their opening day victory at Haddon Heights. Both teams were eager to get onto the field and start making contact to finalize the start of their football season. Lindenwold’s defense dominated both halves of this game while runningback Akeem Cartwright took care of the scoring chores for the Lions scoring the only two touchdowns of the game. Lindenwold would post a 14-0 win over Haddon Heights in a Colonial Conference game. |

Action Packed Second Half Finds Highland on Top Saturday, September 10, 2005 By Vincent Lewis High school football had finally begun giving everyone another avenue of taking their mind off of the ridiculous gasoline prices that have hit our country. Enjoying, ironically, beautiful sunshine and pleasant temperatures, the Highland Tartans were hosting the Rams from Gloucester Catholic in a Tri-County Conference Royal Division game. Both teams would score rushing touchdowns in a penalty filled opening quarter, but began to execute textbook football the rest of the way. Highland would bounce back from a four point deficit and win this game in the fourth quarter by a 42-32 score. |

Gloucester Celebrates Open Day With a win over Lindenwold Saturday, September 10, 2005 By Susan Hall The game is soccer is definitely a team sport that every person on the team desires to come away with the win. Together, each player works hard in positioning themselves into receiving the ball and moving it down field for a scoring chance. That’s what Gloucester City girl’s soccer team had to do in order to control the tempo early against visiting Lindenwold in a non-league game. Gloucester would score the first goal of the game and never looked back. The Lady Lions from Gloucester would win this game by a 4-1 margin. Erika Smizer scored a goal and had two assists. |

Thunder Force "Game 5" with Coleman's Walkoff HR Saturday, September 10, 2005 By Dan Loney Michael Coleman's "walkoff" homer to lead off the 9th Inning gave the Trenton Thunder a 3-2 win over Portland on Saturday night. The win forces a decisive Game #5 on Sunday in Portland, ME at 6:00 PM. Trenton, now tied in the series at 2-2, trailed 2-0 into the 8th Inning. Portland starter Charlie Zink carried a no-hitter into the 6th Inning and worked six shutout innings on the night. Reliever Edgar Martinez carried the shutout to two outs in the 8th Inning before allowing a double to Thunder 2B Gabe Lopez. Jim Mann entered the game and allowed a two-run homer to Bronson Sardinha to tie the game. |

Sterling Starts New Season with a Win Friday, September 9, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty It was the start of the season that every team is trying to achieve. Winning the opening day game whether on the road or at home seem to motivate the entire team into believing that the coaching staff’s game plan has a new meaning. Collingswood was playing host to the Silver Knights from Sterling, but on this day the visiting team would walk away with the victory. Playing in a Colonial Conference boy’s soccer game, Sterling used four different players to post a 4-0 win. |

Thunder Stay Alive with 2-0 Win Friday, September 9, 2005 By Dan Loney Three Trenton pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout to lead the Thunder to a 2-0 win over Portland on Friday night in the Northern Division Championship Series. Portland still leads the "Best of Five" series by two games to one. The Thunder scored their only runs on bases-loaded walks in the 3rd and 6th Innings off Portland starter David Pauley. A walk to Michael Coleman plated the first run with a walk to SS Ramiro Pena scoring tyhe second run. An error by Portland SS Hanley Ramirez set up the second Trenton run. Pauley (0-1) allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out five. |

Raptor of the Week: Rodney Guishard Tuesday, September 6, 2005 By Mike Ballard Sophomore forward Rodney Guishard started the men’s soccer season in style, collecting a pair of goals as the Scarlet Raptors opened their season with a pair of impressive wins. In the season opener, he scored the game-winning goal as Rutgers-Camden edged 22nd-ranked Elizabethtown College, 2-1, Sept. 1. He added a goal in the second game as the Raptors toppled York (NY) College, 9-0, Sept. 3. The Rutgers-Camden men’s soccer team didn’t waste any time serving notice that it is a force to be reckoned with. The Scarlet Raptors opened their season with a 2-1 comeback victory over Elizabethtown College Sept. 1 in Camden to upset the team ranked No. 22 in the pre-season Division III national rankings. |
