Ice Hockey Spotlight: Sunday, March 20, 2005 By Al Cohen Neil Little made 32 saves and Jon Sim scored two more goals to lead the Philadelphia Phantoms to a 5-0 victory over the Portland Pirates tonight in front of a crowd of 9,575 at the Wachovia Spectrum. Rookie R.J. Umberger added a goal and two assists, while defensemen Joni Pitkanen and John Slaney each chipped in a pair of assists as Philadelphia won for the fifth time in its last seven games. With the win, Philadelphia (85 points) moved into a first-place tie with Binghamton in the AHL's East Division. However, the Phantoms have played one less game than the Senators. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Saturday, March 19, 2005 By Al Cohen Denis Hamel scored on a two-on-one rush in overtime, as the Binghamton Senators erased an early two-goal deficit to defeat the Philadelphia Phantoms at Broome County Arena, 4-3. Hamel raced in with Antonie Vermette and roofed a wrist shot past goaltender Antero Niittymaki with 1:04 left in the extra session to give the Senators the victory. Binghamton tied the game 2-2 early in the third period, when Brandon Bochenski's slap shot beat Niittymaki through a screen just 57 seconds in. |
Soccer Spotlight: Saturday, March 19, 2005 By David Deal The Philadelphia KiXX (18-14) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 9-6 victory over the two-time defending Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Champion Baltimore Blast (13-17) in front of 6,106 fans at the Wachovia Spectrum tonight. KiXX player/coach Don D’Ambra registered the game-winning goal on a pass from teammate Ze Roberto at 12:55 of the third quarter. Peter Pappas (16-12) earned the victory in net for Philadelphia, stopping all four of the shots he faced in the first half, while Brian Rowland took the loss for the Blast with six saves on 15 chances. |
Lacrosse Spotlight: Friday, March 18, 2005 By Jennifer Stefani Eight different players scored for the Wings (6-6) as they defeated Colorado, 15-12, Friday at the Wachovia Center in front of 11,742 fans. Jeff Ratcliffe led the offense with four goals and three assists. Goalie Dallas Eliuk earned the win with 31 saves. Former Wings’ MVP Gary Gait returned to Philadelphia for his final game. He will be retiring at the end of the season. He had one goal and two assists. Gavin Prout led the Mammoth with five goals and two assists. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Friday, March 18, 2005 By Al Cohen Ben Stafford, John Slaney and Boyd Kane all scored third-period goals to lift the Philadelphia Phantoms to a 4-2 victory over the Worcester IceCats tonight at the Wachovia Spectrum. Jon Sim added a power-play goal in the second period for Philadelphia, which has captured four of its last five games. Antero Niittymaki won his fourth straight start by stopping 23-of-25 shots. With the victory, Philadelphia remained tied with Norfolk for second place in the AHL's East Division with 82 points. Binghamton owns first place with 83, but the Senators and Admirals have both played two more games than the Phantoms. |
South Jersey Baseball: Wednesday, March 16, 2005 By Denny Watson Think spring! The Atlantic City Surf will open the ticket office for individual ticket sales on Monday, March 21 at 9:00am. Expected to go early are tickets for the nine fireworks nights so Surf fans are encouraged to purchase their seats early. Other than the nine fireworks shows, the Surf will be holding Spiderman Day on June 18. Kids will have a chance on that Saturday afternoon to meet their favorite wall crawling, web slinging superhero, and the first 1000 kids (12 and under) will receive a Spiderman bobblehead doll courtesy of Pepsi. |
Tennis Spotlight: Wednesday, March 16, 2005 By Bob Heller The USP men's tennis team started their spring season off right, recording a near sweep of Arcadia University, 7-1 yesterday. USP swept all three doubles matches and captured four of the six singles contests en route to the win to improve to 2-1 overall. Tyler Weisel and Olufemi Ogunkorode cruised to an 8-1 win over Tim Fitzgerald and Nick Cocco at #1 doubles while Roberto Franco and Dave Sen scored an 8-2 pro-set win over Dan Bradley and Manuel Olaciregvi. Ryan Pell and Daniel Lewycky rounded out the doubles winners with a 9-7 win over Tom Fries and Matt Rogers. |
South Jersey Baseball: Tuesday, March 15, 2005 By Bill Cook The Grand Slam We Care Foundation and its’ two member organizations, the Lakewood BlueClaws and the Trenton Thunder Minor League Baseball teams, are once again teaming up with Wachovia Bank for the charitable community initiative called the Educational Winners Circle. The program helps fund educational opportunities for children in the Ocean and Monmouth County area along with the Trenton community. The BlueClaws and Thunder donate five cents from every ticket sold during their respective seasons and Wachovia Bank matches each donation from the two ballparks. The program is entering its’ 11th year and has raised over a half million dollars for children on the Jersey Shore and in the greater Trenton area. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, March 14, 2005 By Mike Costantino Moorestown opened the Flyers Cup Tournament with a 4-1 win over Wissahickon, despite the efforts of goaltender Nick DiSammartino who was brilliant in nets for the visiting Trojans as Moorestown out shot Wissahickon 43-15. As was the case all season, Moorestown had four different players score and used back-up goalie Max Paluszynski in nets. After a scoreless first period, Moorestown broke out on top as Mike Furey came down the right side and used his speed to turn the corner and beat DiSammartino with just over six minutes left in the second period. Just over three minutes later, Kevin Schaeffer broke down the left side and his cross-ice pass deflected on the defenseman and into the net for a 2-0 lead. |
College Baseball: Monday, March 14, 2005 By Mike Ballard It didn’t take Nick Faragasso long to make the transition to Rutgers-Camden baseball. In his first five games with the Raptors since transferring from Div. II University of New Haven (CT), the junior second baseman hit .500 (10-for-20) with three runs and eight RBIs. He had three doubles, one triple and one walk, and was successful on his lone stolen base attempt. Faragasso’s addition paid off immediately for the Scarlet Raptors when he collected one RBI in each of his four plate appearances in a season-opening win over Albright, going 2-for-3 and adding a sacrifice fly. In his first four games he hit .625 (10-for-16) before having his four-game hitting streak snapped in a win over Occidental. |
