Event Spotlight: Saturday, March 15, 2003 By David W. Unkle It was gut check time for the Philadelphia Wings (7-5) as the National Lacrosse League’s top team, the Buffalo Bandits (9-2) came to town on the heels of a six-game winning streak. Philadelphia, playing their best lacrosse of the season and on their own four-game winning streak, was ready for the challenge. Buffalo uses their physical style of play to set up their offensive game; witness the Bandits atop the NLL rankings in penalties/minutes per game (13.5/32:00) and goals per game (15.4). The Wings game plan was basic: grab the early lead, keep Buffalo’s physical presence from setting up an offensive outburst in the final quarters of the first and second half, and avoid power play and transition goals. |
Event Spotlight: Thursday, March 13, 2003 By David W. Unkle The Flyers have thirteen games left in the regular season in which to determine their final position in the Eastern Conference which could determine how long hockey is being played at Broad & Pattison. The recent acquisitions of Dmitri Yushkevich and Claude Lapointe addressed some of the team's need yet firepower was the key ingredient missing from the lineup. Monday's trade which brought Tony Amonte to the Flyers filled a major void for the Flyers. Amonte pulling on the Orange and White for the first time was the big story that everyone knew about. But it was the bigger story that had the First Union Center buzzing before the game started. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, March 13, 2003 By Jerome Michaels For three quarters, it looked as if Paulsboro would have to come up big again in the final quarter to advance to the Group 1 State Championship game. The Red Raiders, even though leading for most of this game, did not seem to have that shooter’s touch against Piscataway Tech during their semi-final competition. In the end, Paulsboro would explode down the stretch behind the efforts of George Davis and Russell Carter’s free throw from the line helped the Red Raiders move on to the title game. Paulsboro would win the game 70-54 and will play against Bloomfield Tech for the championship. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, March 11, 2003 By Jerome Michaels Normally a basketball game is decided after four quarters has been played with the stronger team outscoring the weaker team. There are times, not too many of them, when a fiercely competitive competition between two equally talented teams can’t decide the winner after thirty-two minutes has been played. So how does one explain the results when double overtime is needed to decide the winner? The Camden Panthers and the Chimeras from Willingboro were those teams looking to capture the South Jersey Group III championship being played at Eastern High School. The Panthers finally ended the game, outlasting Willingboro in double overtime by one point, 72-71 to claim the title. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, March 11, 2003 By Vincent Lewis The finals always bring out the best in every player stepping out on the basketball court. Paulsboro's Russell Carter and Schalick's Paul Gause each has demonstrated all season long that they could lead their team to a title. Eager to get the game started and taking their first shot removing all the anxiety out of their body, the South Jersey Group 1 boy's champions were crowned at Clearview High School this night. With the game on the line and Schalick attempting to tie this game late, Carter's defense sealed the Red Raiders 89-86 victory to claim the title. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, March 10, 2003 By Mike Costantino Danny Meyers first period performance kept Eastern in the game and Bryan Schellenhammer scored two goals in the third period as the Eastern Vikings defeated Clearview 7-4 to win the SJHSIHL Championship on Monday night at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Clearview peppered Myers in the first period, launching twenty shots to just six for Eastern and made stellar saves on Dave Gooch, twice, stoned Bill Dunbar on a break and robbed Chris Riggs from in close. Riggs finally put Clearview up 1-0 putting home a rebound after Wyatt Fox hit the post. Unable to generate much offense in the first period, Eastern was very fortunate to trail by just one. They quickly tied the game as the second period started with the Vikings on the power play. |
