Team Conditioning Systems: Sunday, March 2, 2003 By Gregory "Graig" White When it comes to chest training, there are several schools of thought. Do you just go in and lift as heavy as you can? Do you do thirty sets? Do you train Super-Slow? What's an athlete to do? First, let's define the situation. The function of the pec is to push objects away from the body, and is considered one of the biggest muscles in the body. With that in mind, we now have a better idea as to how to attack this problem. There is a proverb that asks, "How does one eat an elephant"? The answer, "one bite at a time” and that is the approach we use when training chest. |
Event Spotlight: Sunday, March 2, 2003 By Sanipa Koetsawasdi The 3rd and final day has arrived for the Riverside Winter Open as the semifinalists play today to see if they can make it as finalists. Miller was able to take both of his doubles to the finals while, coincidentally, the first match of the day as well as the last match of the day had retirees. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, March 1, 2003 By Crystal Parker Who really has the advantage playing at home when Haddon Heights or Haddonfield takes the court for any high school sporting activity? Both sides of the gymnasium are usually packed with fans supporting their team giving them all the comforts of home. Well Megan Heuter must of felt very comfortable, as she had no problems knocking down the jumper that gave the Lady Garnets the lead for good late in the final minutes. Haddon Heights turned a two-point deficit at the end of the third quarter into a 49-47 victory for the Conference title. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, March 1, 2003 By Art Redd Playing an unfamiliar team always presents new challenges for both the coaching staff and the players. That was the situation with the girl’s basketball team from Wildwood competing against the Lady Tartans from Highland for the Tri-County Conference Title. The Warriors’ Lana Harshaw is the leading scorer for Wildwood as her ability to take control of a game inside the paint has been established during their 19 game winning streak. Highland, behind the two juniors Lisa Steele and Danielle Hemerka, have cause havoc for opposing defenses all season long. When the two teams met Saturday afternoon at Williamstown, Highland (21-3) dominated the game from the start as Lisa Steele’s game high 32-points highlighted their 19 point victory. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, March 1, 2003 By Art Redd The Schalick boy’s basketball team was not satisfied with just winning the Tri-County Conference Classic Division. Standing in their way were the Spartans from Deptford High School. When the final buzzer sounded to end the game, a total of 174 points were scored with over 40 three-point attempts flying through the air. Sophomore guard Paul Gause helped with those totals by scoring 43 points during their win against Deptford at Williamstown High School. With their 93-81 victory, Schalick won the Tri-County Conference crown. |
Event Spotlight: Saturday, March 1, 2003 By Sanipa Koetsawasdi The sky was gray, the air was cold, and it kept raining all weekend long, but that didn’t hinder tennis players from around the area, which included Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Delaware as they played indoors at the Aquahab Riverside Racquet Club competing in the Riverside Winter Open this year. Coordinator and referee, Russell Gregory, did everything possible to make things run as smoothly as they can in this year’s three-day event running from February 28th March 2nd. Among the finest players this year included South Jersey’s Boris Fetbroyt, Marius C. Stan, Tim Terista, Seth A. Miller, and Christopher I. Carosella. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, February 28, 2003 By Mike Costantino Seven different players scored as Paul VI rallied from a two-goal deficit and defeated Timber Creek 7-4 in tournament action played in front of a packed house at High Ridge on Friday night. After goals by Justin Palmer and Matt Carpenter had given Timber Creek a 2-0 lead, Brett Balco got one back for Paul VI on the power play to give them some momentum heading into the second period. When Paul VI looks back on their playoff run, their play in the second period should be one they remember. After Brett Doyle tied the score at 2-2, Paul VI would score three goals in forty seconds to seemingly take control of the game. First Daniel Chambers was sent in by Peter Antinore on a breakaway for a 3-2 lead. Then right after the face-off Antinore was set-up by Rich Ferro and his quick shot made it 4-2. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, February 27, 2003 By Vincent Lewis Ending the season with a seven game-winning streak is a great momentum builder right before the upcoming state tournament. Collingswood was that team as coach Nancy O’Neill watched her Lady Panthers roll past Camden Catholic 48-31 on the Irish home court. Collingswood would start this non-league game off strong and stayed ahead of their opponent all game. Camden Catholic just could not get the shots to fall on this day and the Lady Panthers took full advantage. Collingswood attacked the basket on offense as they were determined to finish the season strong with a win. |
Event Spotlight: Thursday, February 27, 2003 By David W. Unkle He promised us so much more in the pre-season but this year’s version of the power play looked frighteningly similar to the one that contributed to another early demise for the Philadelphia Flyers. However, that was before the Flyers played a home-home series with the Chicago Blackhawks. |
Event Spotlight: Wednesday, February 26, 2003 By David W. Unkle A severely depleted Philadelphia KiXX roster could not overcome P.J. Wakefield’s hat trick as the Baltimore Blast took advantage of every Philadelphia miscue en route to a 12-7 victory. Philadelphia lost their first game of the season at home while ending their 24-game winning streak at the First Union Spectrum dating back to January 26, 2002. |
Team Conditioning Systems: Tuesday, February 25, 2002 By Gregory "Graig" White Annoucing the 9th Annual Team Conditioning Systems All-Strength Team. The All-Strength team is our way of recognizing athletes that know the way to win championships is to be fully prepared. They do what they need to do to take their game to the next level without shortcuts. Our All-Strength team is not all about physical strength, the strength of an athletes character plays a large role in who gets selected. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, February 24, 2003 By Mike Costantino Anthony Orner broke a 2-2 tie with five minutes left in the game and Danny Meyer's play in goal was exactly what Eastern needed to defeat Clearview for the first time this season, 3-2 in tournament action in Vineland. After a scoreless first period, Clearview scored a power play goal as Bill Dunbar and Jon Probe set up Tom Fritz whose slap shot from the point made it 1-0. Eastern came back moments later as Sean Sullivan broke in all-alone and tied the score at 1-1. Brandon Tunstall gave Eastern the lead at 2-1 as he used the defenseman as a screen as he was skating across the slot and shot the puck along the ice. Clearview had some quality scoring chances, including one by Dave Gooch but Meyers stoned him. Later in the period Clearview scored its second power play goal as Nick Vacarino threaded a pass from behind the net to Gooch and he was able to find the long side and we were tied at 2-2 after two. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, February 24, 2003 By Mike Costantino Tom Conner scored with seven minutes remaining in the game to snap a 3-3 tie and help Cherokee roll past Washington Township 6-3. The Chiefs proved they’re not willing to give up their title. Cherokee came out flying in the first period firing twenty shots on goal and scoring three times. Sean Zahacewski put Cherokee up 1-0 three minutes into the game as he one-timed a shot on a feed from Mike Garofolo. Township answered right back as Steve Amato was left unattended in the slot. Bill Connoly gave Cherokee a 2-1 lead as he skated in front and found an opening on the short side and beat Adam Seczech. Cherokee picked the right time to play its best period as they kept firing on Seczech, and Adam responded with one of his finer efforts. |
