South Jersey Soccer: Sunday, December 1, 2002 SJSports Staff Writer The Berlin Township Tornado blew into the 22nd annual Cinnaminson Thanksgiving Tournament with very high expectations. They had just completed a very successful 7-1-1 record this season. Game one against the Delran Express was a very defensive game leading to a 3-2 Berlin Township victory. Goalie Vincent Wilson and his stellar defense of Armando Silva, Chris Barbour and Nick Yaworski were tested time and time again but held strong for the win. |
Event Spotlight: Sunday, December 1, 2002 SJSports Staff Writer Led by defenseman Drew Kopp (2G, 5 P) and strong goaltending by Peter Pappas, the Philadelphia KiXX maintained their undefeated record at home as the topped visiting San Diego in front of 3,752 fans at the First Union Spectrum. Playing for the first time in ten days (the KiXX defeated these same San Diego Sockers 10-5 on November 20), the KiXX drew first blood and never surrendered the lead in a game that was closer than the final score would indicate. |
South Jersey Soccer: Saturday, November 30, 2002 SJSports Staff Writer It all started some thirty-one years ago by the then Mayor, John Fowler. He had heard about the South Jersey Soccer League through his many contacts and began a search for someone to bring it to reality in Berlin Township. |
High School Football: Saturday, November 30, 2002 By Vincent Lewis The end of this game was a scene being repeated by football players throughout the area. This weekend would be the last time to suit up as not only the seniors, but also the entire squad face the fact that this was their final game. Except for the upcoming group championship matches, the Thanksgiving weekend is a reminder that the football season is just about over. When Gloucester and Gloucester Catholic took the field this afternoon, both teams were looking to finish on a winning note. The Lions would tie, then win the game on a two-point conversion to defeat the Rams from Gloucester Catholic by a 14-12 margin. |
High School Football: Friday, November 29, 2002 By Jerome Michaels Even though this was the traditional Thanksgiving football game between Holy Cross and Moorestown, this weekend's matchup had a lot at stake for both teams. Moorestown's senior runningback Albert Young was looking to rush for his second 2,000-yard season in his last game as a high school student. Both of these teams were also playing for the Burlington/Olympic Patriot Division championship. Young would rush for over 200 yards in this game. Holy Cross would win the game with a touchdown reception by London Fryar with 13 seconds remaining in the game. The Lancers come from behind 35-34 victory gave them the divisional title and now they look to capture the Parochial 3 State Championship next weekend. |
Event Spotlight: Friday, November 29, 2002 By Patrick Williams PHILADELPHIA - Now that Thanksgiving has passed, perhaps the Phantoms can draw up their lists for Santa Claus. Number one on that list should be some goals. Recent games have shown the Phantoms do have an ability to put shots on net. Generating goals from those shots is another story altogether. Peter Budaj's 31 saves in net for Hershey paced the Bears in a 2-0 win over the Phantoms at the First Union Spectrum. The win was the rookie goaltender's first professional shutout. Brian Willsie provided Hershey's two goals in his return from a stint in Colorado. |
High School Football: Thursday, November 28, 2002 By Vincent Lewis It was a site to see, as hundreds of former players and cheerleading were anxious to line up on the field to represent the year they participated in this classic football match. Haddonfield and Haddon Heights have been playing each other for quite some time now. In fact, this weekend's Thanksgiving football game was to celebrate the 100 years these two teams have been meeting since 1902. A pre-game show entertained the capacity crowd reflecting how important this football rivalry meant to the community. Haddon Heights and Haddonfield played a close game with the Garnets winning 9-7 on a Matt Licketto field goal. |
Event Spotlight: Wednesday, November 27, 2002 By Patrick Williams PHILADELPHIA - The season one quarter through, the Phantoms are shaping up as a team that will need to battle for every point. Last night they did just that, surviving a shaky second period en route to a 4-2 win over Rochester before 5,315 at the First Union Spectrum. The Phantoms (8-9-1-2, 19 points) rebounded from a 2-1 loss last Saturday in Bridgeport. Jack Baker and Peter Vandermeer both collected their first goals of the season in the win. Antero Niittymaki contributed 22 saves, as Neil Little remains sidelined with a knee injury. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, November 25, 2002 By Mike Costantino Anthony Orner had three goals and three assists to power Eastern to an 11-2 victory over Rancocas Valley. Sean Sullivan added two goals and two assists and Brian Williams stopped 23 shots as Eastern moved to within five points of first place Clearview. The line of Orner, Sullivan and Rubino created numerous chances every time they were on the ice while Coach Pontonio got a glimpse of what that line can do when they stay out of the penalty box. Williams had a solid game, stopping some point blank shots and only giving up two goals, both on odd-man rushes. Aaron Smith and Ray Mellon scored the goals for Rancocas Valley. |
