High School Wrestling: Friday, January 29, 1999
By Vincent Lewis Jr.
It couldn't have been scripted any better when two very good wrestling teams go against one another. With each team getting their share of pins and decisions, this match was decided by the final bout. The Eastern Vikings (7-3) upset the Lenape Indians (9-1) by getting a pin by Mike Davidowich to defeat their opponent 27-26. This was a classic example of a team not giving up to score the come from behind victory.

Outplayed. That's the only word you need to describe how the Lenape Indians fared against their cross-town rival, the Shawnee Renegades, as Lenape lost 72-44. Amazingly enough, the final score doesn't indicate how bad Lenape was beaten. Let's put it this way, Lenape didn't score a basket until three minutes were left in the second quarter.

The first game for BTAA PeeWee Basketball saw Team 1, the Maroon Team play Team 3, The Purple Vikings. The final score was 8-10 in favor of the Vikings. Both teams played well. For the Maroon Team, R. Sheehan scored 4 points, J. Schantz scored 2 points, and T. Bruckner scored 2 points. M. Sparks had a great game. For the Purple Vikings, B. Harvey scored 4 points, L. Buffington scored 4 points, and L. Phelps scored 2 points. C. Barbour had 2 rebounds and showed some good passing as well as A. Lemm and J. Gardner. A special thank you to Coach Barbara for her great "Ref-ing". The kids learned a lot from her.

Winning Ways: Wednesday, January 27, 1999
By Gregory "Graig" White This morning I was in the weight room and one of my athletes came in looking sad. I asked her, "What's up? Why are you looking so sad?" She said to me that she was upset because she felt like she was in a slump. She asked me, "What's the best way to get out of a slump?" I thought about it for a minute and said to her, "Don't get into one."
That may sound really simplistic, but stay with me and I'll show you that it may not be that simplistic at all.

In what could have been a preview of the SJHSIHL finals, Eastern overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period and defeated Clearview 5-4 on a goal by John Schellenhammer with twelve seconds left in the game. This game had a playoff atmosphere and as the game wore on, the question was whether the excellent team defense played by Clearview would be able to contain the speed of the Vikings led by the two "Mighty Mikes", Cianfrani and Becker.
