AHL Ice Hockey: Sunday, January 24, 1999

On January 24, 1999, the American Hockey League (AHL) held its All-Star Skills Competition at the First Union Center in Philadelphia, Pa. The events that took place had the Team Canadian All-Stars vs. Team PlanetUSA All-Stars. The two teams took part in 7 events: In Glas Co Puck Control Relay, Vic Ambush, Bauer Fastest Skater, Sher-Wood Hardest Shot, Sher-Wood Rapid Fire, Sher-Wood Accuracy Shooting, and Sher-Wood Breakaway Relay.

High School Girls Basketball: Saturday, January 23, 1999

Heavily favored Rancocas Valley hosted Shawnee Saturday afternoon in girl's basketball. It would seem as if this matchup would be another display of a strong RV team wearing down the Lady Renegades. Things don't always happen the way you expect when two good teams battle on the court. Shawnee was able to shut down Rancocas Valley's offense in the second half and defeated them 40-31.

High School Boys Basketball: Friday, January 22, 1999

On Friday night, Bishop Eustace traveled to Washington Township to battle in an Olympic Conference boys basketball game. Both of these teams started out with a fast tempo to establish the early lead. Township did jump out ahead, but Crusader Omar Wellington's basket with 3:02 remaining in the first quarter gave his team a lead they never relinquished. Bishop Eustace went on to a 60-47 victory on the road.

SJHSIHL action pitted the Shawnee Renegades against rival Cherokee Chiefs. The Renegades defeated the host Chiefs 7-1. Keith Williams led Shawnee scorers with 4 goals with Alan Dennison assisting on two of the goals. Paul Caruso picked up the lone goal for the Chiefs.

South Jersey Basketball: Friday, January 22, 1999

The Berlin Township Athletic Association Pee Wee basketball season will have its opening games on Friday, January 29th. The league is made up of 4 teams with each team having 12 players, of ages 6 - 8 years old. The 4 teams are being sponsored by the West Berlin Post Office and are made up of both girls and boys. This is the beginning league, which teaches the players how to dribble, pass, shoot, and play offense/defense. The teams have been practicing since January 5th and will continue every Tuesday and Friday, at 6:30 and 7:30, until February 26th.

The Eastern Vikings defeated Washington Township 7-4 in a game played at the Coliseum on Monday night. Missing six players due to illness and injury, Coach Pontonio said prior to the game, "Lately our team has been playing real well since we had made some roster changes. Tonight however we need to concentrate on our defense."
