South Jersey Modified League: Friday, June 11, 1998
By Nick Straguzzi What pops into your head when someone mentions "men's softball"? Huge guys taking massive swings at lob balls? Final scores that resemble football games? A keg of beer on each bench? And if that someone then says, "no, fastpitch softball", do you think of high school girls in ponytails?
If you were in the vicinity of Laurel Springs Park on Saturday June 13th, you'd best keep those thoughts to yourself. The top men's fastpitch players of the area took the field around 7:30 PM for the 20th annual All-Star Game of the South Jersey Modified Fastpitch League (SJML). It's the culmination of an evening's worth of events that honors not only a league, but a tradition.

Physical Fitness Tip of the Week: Wednesday, June 10, 1998
By Gregory "Graig" White The Event (Step 1):
When conditioning for an event, many factors must be considered. The requirements can vary drastically from sport to sport. Some of the things that must be thought about are, what demands are made on the body, anaerobic, aerobic or both? Which muscles will be stressed, which are the injuries that can most commonly occur? And the most important question, is the conditioning protocol as efficient and effective as it can be?

High School Softball (Group 4 Finals): Saturday, June 6, 1998
By Crystal Parker
This game featured the Clifton Mustangs who had not been defeated over the past two seasons. Most people predicted a Clifton versus Toms River North championship game. But the Chiefs had something to say about that. Cherokee got past Toms River and a very good Hunterdon Central team to get to the finals. But they just could not get that last victory to claim the title. The Mustangs would bat around plus one in the fourth inning to pull ahead 6-0 and shutout the Chiefs 8-0 at Toms River North High School. With the victory, the Mustangs would add one more win to their 63 consecutive win streak.

High School Softball (Group 2 Finals): Saturday, June 6, 1998
By Art Redd
After all the games they have played during the regular season and the playoffs, it came down to two teams. The Kingsway Dragons and Mahwah Thunderbirds knew what was at stake when they travelled to Toms River North High School. Both teams were trying to capture their first state title. Each team had to win five consecutive playoff games to get to the NJSIAA finals. The Dragons would get that title by jumping out to an early lead and capture the State Group 2 championship by defeating the Thunderbirds 4-0. Wendi Miller would keep the Mahwah batters off balance with her pitching and strike out 14 batters.

South Jersey Running: Saturday, June 6, 1998
By The Kid The sixth annual Kings Grant Outdoor Awareness Day 5K June 6 looked more like a training run for some area high school runners than a road race. Three members of the Cherokee boys' track team set the pace for the field of 41 finishers that competed on the fast and flat 3.1-mile loop course around Kings Grant. Senior Jeff Storch, 18, of Marlton won his first title here in 16:55, four seconds ahead of teammate Michael Caputi, 16, of Marlton.
Another Chiefs' runner, David Sitzer, 17, finished third, a minute behind Storch in 17:55.
